Exploring and Discovering Mathematics through Puzzles

Sarah Flannery

The aim of this talk is to show audiences of any age and mathematical skill level how doing (hopefully) enjoyable puzzles can teach many simple and useful lessons while at the same time leading audience members into doing some 'real' Maths without their even realising it.

In an hour I intend to present about four puzzles and explain a little about how my father first introduced me to these problems when I was young. After presenting each puzzle I lead the audience into solving it with me in an structured way. Most importantly I present additional 'explorations' relating to each topic I have covered before moving on to the next.
